The term trenail refers to a wedge or hard wooden pin driven into an exposed dowel to secure the timber, instead of using metal nails. They have been part of the boat builder's craft since the 16th century. A fine dark jarrah beading not only provides a rich contrast to the dark cognac-coloured kauri, but also forms the tenons which help assemble the components. Visible dowels and wedges add to the aesthetic appeal of the furniture.
